Sales & Marketing vs Connecting

I’m going to be speaking about marketing and sales in coaching. I’m going to share with you why it typically doesn’t work!  This idea of positioning yourself as an expert, choosing a niche, and building a website does not work. You’ll notice and I’m going to say this: I don’t have anything against marketers or salespeople. I was in corporate sales for 13 years, so I am very familiar with that space, but when it comes to a coaching business, I’ve connected with many coaches, and not once has anybody come on and said, holy moly, I built a website, signed up for some marketing stuff and my business just exploded.  Listen to the audio- CLICK HERE==>>

Every single one that’s been around for a while will tell you it’s been done through connecting or what I call connecting. And I actually did separate audio, which explains the connecting part. So I’m not going to explain it here but it’s basically speaking to people, being in conversation with people, or getting referrals. Some of them will post, but they’ll tell you posting on social media and those kinds of things just don’t build your business. Listen to the audio- CLICK HERE==>>

The challenge that I see first of all with trying to sell coaching is (I’ve created another audio, in which I speak about the coaching. You get technical coaching and what I call deep coaching or awareness coaching, or insight coaching, or perspective coaching, whatever that is, where a coach actually works with you on who you are and who you are being):

I don’t really want to sell or try and market somebody on coaching or coaching with me. Especially because if I have to try and convince them (now make no mistake I will coach them through things) or if I have to try and use sales tactics or marketing tactics to try and sell them on the coaching or market them on the coaching, I don’t know how committed they are.

So, if you’ve had to convince that client, guess what, a month or two down the road, you could struggle because the person wasn’t actually committed to the coaching. So that’s one flaw with it. The other flaw that I see out there is this marketing pitch where coaching is getting positioned almost like a get-rich, quick scheme. If you get some training from certain coaches, you get a special blueprint that they got from the FBI on how to sell, that nobody else in the whole world has only they have it. And if you sign up with this coach, they going to show you. With this they’re going to help you to be able to create $30,000 worth of clients in the first 60 days, I know I’m exaggerating a little bit. Some of the stuff really is that ridiculous.

Here is the thing, a coaching business is like any other business, there is skill involved and it’s an art. It’s a profession you have to learn.

The only way you learn is to coach a lot for you to get confidence and experience. You then tend to create high-paying clients but the marketing out there is feeding into people’s instant gratification. It’s this idea you just need some secret information and all of a sudden, your business will explode.

Some coaches have signed up on a coaching course and done about two and half minutes of coaching and they expect to earn 6 and 7 figures. They want to earn the same as coaches that have been doing this for 10, 15, or 20 years, it just does not work like that.

With all the coaches I have spoken to and some are doing 7 figures they will tell you they do it through connecting with people or referrals. None of them have built their business through a website or online funnels. Now I am not saying that stuff does not work later down the road when you are well established and you have got a brand or following. For sure in the beginning, when you are starting off, nobody knows you and you have done almost no coaching it just does not work.

The best thing you can do for yourself is to find a coach. I have done separate audio called “what is coaching?” which explains coaching. You want to work with a coach that can provide you with information on how to build the business but also work with you and who you are.

Because essentially at the end of the day, it’s you, that’s going to hold you back. It’s your thinking, thoughts, and ideas that is going to stand in the way.  That’s going to be the difference between you making it or not.  Listen to the audio- CLICK HERE==>>

You want to work with a coach that can work with you through your fears, beliefs, and the stories you have of yourself. There is a big difference between a coach just giving you a whole bunch of information and coaching you on who you are. Information is great and it gets you to a certain point but many times these coaches are just marketers. They will show you a whole bunch of marketing and social media stuff and get you to do everything except coach. You want to find a coach that can work with you on who you are.

The other flaw I see is with this idea of posting how wonderful your life is. Then suggesting if people coach with you they can also have the same life or something…

Here is an example of a coach posting something like that:

“But I’m taking a couple of coaches & consultants and showing them how to enroll 3-4 clients into their $2-10k programs – at the same time – over a quick 15 minute (or less) chat instead of slowly, one at a time, on loooooong 60-90 minute sales calls.”

The problem with this is that if you are not a confident coach even if you get lucky and create a client that pays you $5 0000 you probably would not know what to do with them. The other flaw is how can you tell clients they will be able to sell programs like this when you have no idea of their skill set.

The other flaw here is I don’t want to spend just 15 minutes with a client and sign them up, I hardly know them. I don’t even know if I want to coach this person. I have nothing against marketers but marketers tend to want to sell and coaches tend to serve. Listen to the audio- CLICK HERE==>>
