Without a doubt, the mind is important when it comes to being an athlete. Training the body and increasing skills is normally where the focus is but coaching the mind is often overlooked. There is sometimes focus on motivational type stuff but that is very surface level. Everything is happening from the thought level; the thinking ends up creating the results. Negative thought always ends up creating worse results. Here are a few reasons why you need a Mindset Coach as an athlete:
Work through limiting beliefs and limiting thoughts
The same thinking that got you to this level will be the same thinking that holds you back. We create our results from the beliefs and thoughts we have. Mindset Coaching works deep on these beliefs and thoughts, at every level there will be new challenges. It could be compared to working with a personal trainer for the body, the mind also needs coaching and it’s arguably more important. You will be working at breaking mental barriers
Confidence
Being mentally prepared increases confidence. Working with the mind will build confidence at a much deeper level. This is not a motivational talk that subsides after a while. This is working at the core of who you are being and building confidence from there.
Overthinking
Working with a Mindset Coach will allow you to get out of your own head or as they say get out of your own way. Slowing things down will allow you to be more present and aware. This will allow you to be more relaxed for instance on game day
The Subconscious
Almost everything happens at the subconscious level, it’s the autopilot that is running. When working with a Mindset Coach you are reprogramming the subconscious the same as running a software upgrade on your computer. At every level, there will be new challenges that need to be coached through.
Recover quicker
Perhaps things did not go the way you wanted… Mindset Coaching allows you also to get over it quicker. Spending too much time on what went wrong becomes unhelpful, Mindset Coaching gets you back in the present moment quickly to focus on “what is next?”
Conclusion
Working with a Mindset Coach is very specific, it’s not the same as getting a few tips or pep talks from people around you. There are ways of training the mind, a few of those are mental rehearsal, reframing, and anchoring. A mindset coach does not need to be someone that has more experience than you in that specific sport or role. That would be considered a Mentor Role. There is no doubt that preparing mentally is just as important as preparing physically!!
